I do think that what the government says is what needs to be followed. They are in control over the people that have voted the government in to power. The people who gave control need to be willingly following
I think that Obrien is a suspicious character. With the book, Winston already new the information but it took him reading it to realize that he new it.
Maybe Winston stopped reading right as the book was about to tell him why because he was scared to know. Like the knowledge would get killed even faster.
I think that he stopped reading because I don't really think he wanted to know, because if he finally found out then he would have nothing to go off of.
I thought it was interseting how when the speaker was giving his speach, he was able to change the enemy of ociana, without a realization by the citizens.
Like Joe just mentioned... i think that people can be afraid of the truth. When he stops reading and he is just about to find out what is going to happen, that is very significant to the story. People are afraid of the truth sometimes, although most are eager. Why isn't he eager and wnating to learn more? what is he afraid of? I feel that this is foreshadowing something that may appear in the book. what is int he book?!
I think O'brian is part of the thought police, because going back way to the beginning of the book he made eye contact with Big Brother when he was giving one of his seminars.
I think that Winston stopping his reading is symbolic of what he might find later on in the book. I think that Obrien might be someone who is deep undercover as an agent of the thought police to get the people that are to clever for the normal thought police.
I think that the government is going to kill them, because it's kind of like back when Hitlar was in power, when him and other leaders like him destroy all opposition to their leadership.
I think that the whole society turns on itself and wants to not turn one another in but they feel obligated to or else they could be arrested too. This society just wants to care for themselves and not others.
I think that like Michael said, the government wants to break them with a force and prove a point to other rebels. Does the government use the same technology to change a person's identity such as the process O'Brien explained? If so, rebels who are captured could possibly go through this process.
I think they are really destined to be killed. Along wsith what Rheana said: If they did kill all these people, what would they do with all the bodies? Just bury them? Because then someone could find them...
Doublethink is what makes the society so complex. Unless someone is like Parsons, and a total believer of the system, people who are not, like Winston, will eventually be broken down.
I agree with Kai, when people go to an antique store, they are obviously interested in the past, why else would they be going to an antique store? The government does use this as bait and it is a nasty way to catch poeple who are intruiged by the past and ask the question WHY?
The affection for Julia was there at first because she was rebellious. However, when Winston found out that she really did not care about the rebellion, only about self-preservation, he almost gave up on her.
Isn't it interesting that the gov. captures the people that are total believes of the system, like Parsons, when they could focus their energy on thers like Winston.
I think that O'Brian's job is to get people to admit that they are plotting against the government so that they can bag them and demolish the people that might potentially rebel.
I could see Julia as part of the thought police because she said earlier in the book that she had been in other affairs. Could she have turned in those other guys?
Winston and Julia's whole purpose to their relationship is to rebel. They knew that from the beginning that they were going to die. It was only a matter of time. So if they went to live with the proles, life would be meaningless because they still do not love each other.
I agree with Katie when she said that they wouldn't love eachother if it wasn't forbidden. I think the fact that they are rebelling while being togeter is fueling their love.
I think Julia and Winston's position in the government is what influeced their rebellion. They were aware of the corruption in the government, causing them to think about the unjust nature of the government.
I think that Julia is more like Clarisse. They both just care about being more free and different. But, Montag and Winston actually do somethinig about it.
We mentioned that Julia might be setting Winston up, but with this book taking as many weird turns as it has, what if Winston is actually setting Julia up???
I take back what I said earlier about the government killing people. I think the government takes the rebels and uses a sort of doublethink to change them and make them a new people. Then they just put them back into society.
Personally I don't think that the war is all that important. I mean, the government uses other means to suppress their people, so I don't think that the government invented the war.
@Corbin--From Winston's point I think that's how he viewed their relationship; Julia could have been a hooker spy for the government. I guess we will find out who she really was.
I do believe that the government shelters and does not expose all information to us. As Chloe mentioned with the internment camps. I had never heard of that before either and everything that we learn is from our perspective. There are tons of other persepectives of all of these events in history. Purging history is a disgustingt thought to me. I want to know and I want to learn more about what has happened in the world. It scares me to think thatthis information can and will be destroyed.
I think it is earlier to accept the Holocost and war and stuff here because WE didn't personaly endure it. We believe a lot happened, but it didn't happen directly to us, in American.
The down turn to the economy is good for those who were already in a good spot, but for those who weren't, it is a terrible thing. They have to pay more for things they already couldn't afford.
I do think that what the government says is what needs to be followed. They are in control over the people that have voted the government in to power. The people who gave control need to be willingly following

ReplyDeleteI think that he stopped reading because I don't really think he wanted to know, because if he finally found out then he would have nothing to go off of.
ReplyDeleteHe stoped reading because the author wanted to build suspense.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was interseting how when the speaker was giving his speach, he was able to change the enemy of ociana, without a realization by the citizens.

ReplyDeleteMaybe the thought police thought that Winston and Julia would lead them to others.
ReplyDeleteThe government doesn't need evidence to arrest someone. They just disappear.
ReplyDelete@Maria- Just what I was thinking. Do you think there are many others just like them?
ReplyDeleteI don't get how sex is a crime

ReplyDeleteWhen you are capture by the gov. in this story you DIE!
ReplyDeleteI think that the government is going to kill them, because it's kind of like back when Hitlar was in power, when him and other leaders like him destroy all opposition to their leadership.

ReplyDelete@Corbin--sex for pleasure is a crime; sex for the party (to create more members) is a duty
ReplyDeleteIsnt the bigger punishment forgetting who you are and losing all your free thought then dieing.
ReplyDeleteI think they are really destined to be killed. Along wsith what Rheana said: If they did kill all these people, what would they do with all the bodies? Just bury them? Because then someone could find them...

ReplyDeleteO'Briens job is to fool people by getting close to them and gaining their trust.
ReplyDeleteThe affection for Julia was there at first because she was rebellious. However, when Winston found out that she really did not care about the rebellion, only about self-preservation, he almost gave up on her.

ReplyDeleteI think Julia actually could have a purpose to corrupt lots of people for the Thought Police and just get inside people's minds.
ReplyDeleteI could see Julia as part of the thought police because she said earlier in the book that she had been in other affairs. Could she have turned in those other guys?

ReplyDeleteI think that the reason winston and jullia don't just go join the proles is that they can use their governmental power to rebel more succesfully.
ReplyDeleteSince the brotherhood doesn't even know all the members then could the thought police not know that Julia was a thought police? (If she was..)
ReplyDeleteI think Julia and Winston's position in the government is what influeced their rebellion. They were aware of the corruption in the government, causing them to think about the unjust nature of the government.
ReplyDelete@Maria- But what if Julia is kind of like a hooker and just has sex with innocent guys that the government suspects are going to rebel?
ReplyDeleteI think that Julia is more like Clarisse. They both just care about being more free and different. But, Montag and Winston actually do somethinig about it.
ReplyDeleteWe really don't need to focus on the proles. Winston is captured and can't leave now.
ReplyDeleteWe mentioned that Julia might be setting Winston up, but with this book taking as many weird turns as it has, what if Winston is actually setting Julia up???

ReplyDeleteI don't believe that the U.S. government is at all like this system but we are suppressed from some information.
ReplyDelete@Garret- For what purpose would he be setting her up?
ReplyDeletei think that this story will end in a failed rebelion which will lead to the death of winston and his affiliates.
ReplyDelete@Corbin--From Winston's point I think that's how he viewed their relationship; Julia could have been a hooker spy for the government. I guess we will find out who she really was.

ReplyDeleteI think that people need disaster and war to think about. Think how weird life would be without those worries.
ReplyDeleteI think it is earlier to accept the Holocost and war and stuff here because WE didn't personaly endure it. We believe a lot happened, but it didn't happen directly to us, in American.
ReplyDeleteEvery country tries to teach that they are "the best" and in 1984 it says the other countries lied to their people who lived there as well.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what we learn it will be from one dimension. No matter what we do we will always learn one side.
ReplyDeleteWe will always be supresed from somethings. I mean, we shouldn't believe that the gov. should give us viewing rights to Top Secret documents.
ReplyDeleteI think it's really scary how much America relies on other countries.
ReplyDeleteIt's so scary how much every country is in debt (especially America)
ReplyDeleteThe down turn to the economy is good for those who were already in a good spot, but for those who weren't, it is a terrible thing. They have to pay more for things they already couldn't afford.
